The two-person team is honored for their campaign to accurately model millimeter wave signal attenuation through trees using a 60.5 GHz phased-array-based channel sounder. They characterized the seasonal effects on attenuation by conducting measurement campaigns on various types of trees in the summer and the winter to determine the effect of foliage on signal loss. They used the measurements to calibrate digital tree models of unprecedented accuracy; their results form a new section in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recommendation ITU-R P.833-10, "Attenuation in Vegetation."
