Greenhouse Gas Emissions Quantification and Verification Strategies Workshop

Join prominent experts in identifying measurement and monitoring challenges that could result from implementation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions programs in the United States. Science, technologies, methods, protocols, models, and other tools related to measuring and monitoring emissions are critical to GHG quantification and verification strategies to implement management approaches under discussion (e.g., market-based, command and control). Primary workshop topics and session chairs are shown below. Details on the scope of these topics can be found in background.

  • Power Generation – Point Sources
    Eric Holdsworth, Edison Electric Institute
  • Industrial Generation – Point and Non-point Sources
Ed Rightor, The Dow Chemical Company
  • Distributed/Localized Sources and Sinks
    John Miranowski, Iowa State University
  • Regional and International Emissions
Ralph Keeling, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
  • Carbon Markets
    Daniel Schrag, Harvard University

During the workshop you will have a chance to network with internationally recognized experts from key stakeholders groups—the electrical generation, industrial, and agricultural sectors; the atmospheric monitoring community; regulatory agencies; and government policy makers—in exploring vital needs and challenges in measuring and monitoring GHGs.

This workshop is part of a series of external needs assessments spearheaded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to identify external drivers and opportunities for its measurements and standards efforts. Workshop results will be used by NIST and other decision-makers in the public and private sectors to inform strategic decisions.
