The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will host, on Feb. 18 and 19, 2015, its fourth regional workshop devoted to developing a first-generation framework that will help U.S. communities build resilience to hazard events.
To be held at the Hilton San Diego/Del Mar Hotel, in Del Mar, Calif., the workshop will focus on resilience planning and implementation, with an emphasis on interdependencies among buildings, infrastructure and the social systems in a community. Other topics include resilience tools and metrics and formation of a national standards panel that will sustain continuing efforts to further develop and promote disaster-resilience best practices for communities.
The NIST workshops provide opportunities for a large and diverse array of stakeholders—from community planners and emergency managers to insurers and disaster recovery organizations—to contribute to a first-generation Disaster Resilience Framework. This framework will provide a methodology for all communities to use as they invest and act to reduce vulnerability to hazard events and to improve their capacity to bounce back if an earthquake, flood, wildfire or other natural or human-caused catastrophe strikes.
NIST will post a nearly complete working draft of the initial Disaster Resilience Framework for review by participants one week prior to the workshop. This draft incorporates comments received during previous workshops, public input from other stakeholders, and contributions from the NIST Disaster Resilience Fellows—a team of nine nationally recognized experts in fields ranging from transportation and water infrastructure to societal dimensions of disasters, assembled by NIST to assist in developing the framework.
Recognized leaders in their fields, NIST's new disaster resilience fellows were chosen to complement the knowledge and skill sets of agency researchers developing the framework—a guidance document to help communities prepare for hazardous events and to restore vital functions quickly if disruptive incidents occur.
The workshop is open to all interested parties. Space is limited. The registration fee is $130.
The agenda and other details can be accessed online.
Registration ends at 5 p.m. on Feb. 11, 2015.
