Nien Fan Zhang was born in Shanghai, China. He received his Ph. D degree in statistics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1985 with a specialization in time series analysis. He was a faculty member of University of Science and Technology of China from 1978 to 1981 and a faculty member of Southern Methodist University from 1985 to 1988. He worked at Westhollow Research Center of Shell Oil Company in Houston, Texas as a research statistician from 1988 to 1993. In 1994, he became a member of the Statistical Engineering Division at NIST. His research interests include measurement uncertainty analysis in statistical metrology, time series analysis, and statistical process control.
