NIST Center for Automotive Lightweighting Workshop

Purpose:

This workshop will be held in close conjunction with the NADDRG Spring Meeting here at NIST May 22nd.

This workshop has several goals:

  1. A review of the current research activities of NCAL, seeking feedback that what we are doing is still of high relevance to the automotive industry.
  2. Introduction of our greatly expanded experimental capabilities to our partners and stakeholders, hoping to spur thoughts on future work and collaborations
  3. Set future research directions for research with an expected increase in funding for this program
  4. Begin discussions about mechanisms for industrial and academic interactions with NCAL, including the formation of a consortium.

The output of the workshop will be a report authored primarily by our industrial stakeholders detailing what they feel is most important for NIST / NCAL to be working on to support the goal of manufacturing lighter, more fuel efficient vehicles.  This report will be used to guide the expansion of this program with new internal and consortium funds.

  • Welcome and Overview of the NIST Center for Automotive Lightweighting research activities and mission
  • Brief overview presentation by Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office about AMNPO and AMTech
  • Overview talks by industrial participants on experimental, standards and data needs for automotive lightweighting
  • Tour of our new facilities in Building 231
  • Tasking the breakout groups
  • Lunch
  • Breakout Sessions on Materials, Testing, Models, Standards (exact topics to be determined)

Day 2 (am):  Starting 8:30, finishing no later than 2 pm.

  • Reconvene to find common ground and consensus
  • Discussion on need for and structure of consortium
  • Plans for industrially-authored workshop report

Accommodations:

General travel guidance can be found HERE.  Several hotels are located close by (Hilton, Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn, etc), and cabs are available from the closest Metro stop (Shady Grove on the Red Line).  Flying into BWI and Dulles are equally easy, but for those who wish to avoid renting a car, National is best.
