25th Anniversary

25 years ago, legislation was signed into law creating the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). What started out as a handful of MEP Centers in the early 90s has grown into a nationwide network serving manufacturers in every state. MEP is a public-private partnership working across government and industry to identify the needs of manufacturers, present opportunities for growth, and foster a competitive industry.  Since 1988, MEP has worked with nearly 76,000 manufacturers leading to $79 billion in sales and $12.8 billion in savings. MEP’s work has helped create more than 636,000 jobs, which have also generated more than $20 billion in total investment in U.S. manufacturing.

A Resource for Manufacturers

In anticipation of our 25th Anniversary, we reflect on events of the last two and a half decades that significantly impacted the global economy, manufacturing, and the Manufacturing Extension Partnership.

MEP has taken its cues from the lessons of global opportunities and challenges, and the daily changes of our client base. The program's value and effectiveness will be measured in the impact of our services and the evolving tide of progress and growth of our clients.

Our National Network

MEP is a nationwide system that helps manufacturers maximize their potential and grow their businesses. What started as a small program with only three centers 25 years ago,  has now developed into a nationwide network of manufacturing assistance centers in each state. The MEP network includes more than 1,300 technical experts focused on solving manufacturers’ biggest challenges and identifying opportunities for growth. MEP centers are a diverse network of state, university-based, and non-profit organizations that offer products and services that meet the specific needs of their local manufacturers. Each Center works directly with local manufacturers to provide them with a wide array of fundamental services from innovation and technology strategies, to process efficiency improvements, to green manufacturing.

Media: Heroes of American Manufacturing

For the past 25 years, MEP has been helping manufacturers grow and succeed. Our Heroes for American Manufacturing Series, highlight the incredible innovation, determination and work of U.S. Manufacturers.

Commerce Blog: 25 Years of Supporting U.S. Manufacturing
Guest blog post by Dr. Patrick Gallagher, NIST Director and Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology

The year’s end is a natural time to look back on past accomplishments. This year, we’re reflecting on 25 successful years of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Holling’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). MEP is a public-private partnership that helps mostly small and mid-size manufacturers enhance productivity and technological performance, and strengthen their global competitiveness. Through a network of more than 400 centers in every state and Puerto Rico, about 1,300 MEP experts help make these businesses—and the U.S. economy—stronger. Read More
