The workshop "Uncertainty Quantification in Materials Science" will be held at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD on January 14-15, 2016. This will be a small-scale event that aims to promote direct dialogue between materials and mathematical/statistical communities.
Uncertainties plague a variety of materials science applications and the irrigorous quantification calls for an integrated effort of the materials science and mathematical communities. The main idea of this MGI-related all-invited meeting is to bring together experts from both sides to formulate the most pressing problems in uncertainty quantification, as it pertains to materials research, and identify possible ways of addressing these challenges. Materials science topics will cover measurements and prediction of structure of matter, chemical composition, phase equilibria, microstructure, physical dimensions, and functional properties. A summary report will be widely disseminated with a hope of stimulating new projects and collaborations in this critical research area.
