Investigators and first responders can find the latest recommendations on crime scene investigations in the newly updated Crime Scene Investigation, a Guide for Law Enforcement.

The free guide, significantly expanded since it was first published in January 2000, covers key practices in detail. Developed by noted experts, this 180-page, vastly expanded edition provides step-by-step recommendations to lead law enforcement through this crucial, first phase of the justice process. This updated version leverages the latest developments in evidence collection techniques and makes them available for mobile platforms such as e-readers, smartphones and tablets for quick reference in the field.

Thoroughly reviewed by more than a dozen subject matter experts, Crime Scene Investigation, A Guide for Law Enforcement is the result of a partnership of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, National Institute of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, and the National Forensic Science Technology Center. The Bureau of Justice Assistance funded it through a cooperative agreement.

Crime Scene Investigation, a Guide for Law Enforcement is available for download at www.nist.gov/forensics/upload/Crime-Scene-Investigation.pdf (opens a pdf). A version for electronic readers is available from the National Forensic Science Technology Center website.
