Physical security involves the employment of people, technology and materials to protect a facility, campus, critical infrastructure, or high value area against the effects of unauthorized access, theft, fire, malicious destruction, terrorism, loss, or other intentional crime or damage. NIST has several projects and programs working in this area.

The NIST Counterterrorism and Response Technologies program sponsors research in the NIST laboratories and works with other agencies to develop standards and technologies.
