Dr. Darwin R. Reyes-Hernandez

Dr. Reyes-Hernandez is a research chemist in the Nanoscale Metrology Group in the Semiconductor & Dimensional Metrology Division of the Physical Measurement Laboratory (PML) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He received his Ph.D. and B.S. in chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico. He also received an M.S. in Applied Biomedical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University. In his doctoral work, he combined the fields of environmental analytical chemistry and toxicology. In it, he chemically characterized airborne particulate matter from an area in Puerto Rico of high incidence of cancer, asthma, and other respiratory diseases, using cell-based toxicological assays. After completing his Ph.D. he was awarded with a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship to work with Professor Andreas Manz at Imperial College, London, U.K., where he worked for two years. During this postdoctoral experience, he worked with microfluidic devices in developing two-dimensional separation systems and analog computing using glow discharge in microfluidic chips.

Dr. Reyes-Hernandez was awarded in 2002 with a National Research Council postdoctoral fellowship to work at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), USA. When he joined NIST he started developing bioelectronics-related technology, where he combined his previous research experiences in cell-based measurements and microfluidics with electronics manipulation and measurements. Currently, Dr. Reyes-Hernandez is working with dielectrophoretic manipulation of cells in microfluidic devices for long-term cell survival experiments. His research comprises the design of electronic components for dielectrophoresis (DEP) manipulation, the engineering of cell adhesive surfaces to allow for robust cellular entrapment and cell viability after exposure to DEP conditions, and designing microfluidic systems to provide with the required environment for cell experiments.

During his time at NIST, Dr. Reyes-Hernandez has been part of various intramural funded projects including research funded by the Advanced Technology Program (ATP), Director's Reserve Funds, and Innovations in Measurement Science Program (IMS).

Dr. Reyes was the co-chair of the 1st Annual Diversity Day celebrated at NIST in 2006 and was a member of the Laboratory Diversity Team for 3 years. He was awarded the NIST EEO Diversity Award (2008) for his contribution in organizing the 1st Annual Diversity Day. He was also an executive committee member (treasurer) of the NIST Sigma Xi. Dr. Reyes-Hernandez is currently the Gaithersburg EEEL representative in the Nanoparticle Safety Committee. This committee drafted the first NIST-wide Health and Safety Instructions for the handling of nanoparticles. He is also a member of the NIST Biosafety Committee.
