Workshop: Measurement Challenges and Opportunities in Developing Smart Grid Testbeds

To achieve the full potential of the evolving smart grid, industry, academia, and government laboratories are developing dedicated testbeds to characterize smart grid equipment and systems and validate smart grid performance and standards. However, these efforts tend to focus on isolated aspects of smart grid characterization and measurement. Well-developed and highly integrated testbeds are needed to more fully characterize the smart grid and measure a complete spectrum of performance parameters.

Workshop Objectives

This workshop will bring together diverse stakeholders to
share perspectives, identify the major technological and measurement science challenges that impede smart grid testbed development, and discuss the best approaches for their design and operation.

Who Should Attend

Representatives of companies, academia, government, trade and industry associations, standards organizations, and others with key roles in advancing the Smart Grid via testbed solutions.

Join your colleagues in addressing these vital issues:

  • The major problems that will require smart grid test bed solutions
  • Characteristics and attributes of next generation testbeds needed for full characterization, performance measurement, and validation of the smart grid
  • R&D needed for next generation and advanced testbeds
  • Components and architectures for composable, modular smart grid testbeds
  • Remote access and control of smart grid testbeds
  • Opportunities for multi-center, interconnected testbeds for smart grid within the larger context of smart, cyber-physical systems

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is sponsoring this workshop as part of its efforts to assess measurement science and standards needed to support the smart grid. NIST's mission is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life.
