Ian Bell and Monika Thol Named “Emerging Investigators” by Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data

2015 MML Postdoctoral Fellow Awardee

Ian Bell of MML's Applied Chemicals and Materials Division was named as an Emerging Investigator in the field of chemical thermodynamics by the Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data, in a special issue of the journal published July 12, 2018 by the American Chemical Society (https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.jced.8b00507). Bell was recognized for the development of highly reliable thermophysical property models, with highly dependable algorithms to carry out, for example, extremely reliable density calculations, construct binary mixture px and Tx diagrams, or locate critical points. He was also recognized for his work developing algorithms that allow for automatic fitting of property models without any human intervention. Monika Thol, currently a guest researcher in ACMD, was also honored with this recognition.  Thol is visiting the Division to further her cited work in the area of theoretical models which can be used to calculate all thermodynamic state properties from a single correlation; these models are developed for pure fluids and mixtures for use in process and thermal engineering applications. Bell and Thol, who are collaborating on these efforts, are among a group of 25 researchers that “will be defining [the] field over the coming decades.”
