NIST ITL - ANSI Accredited Standards Developer
NIST ITL (and its predecessor organizations) has been accredited by ANSI as a standards developer since October 5, 1984. We are accredited to develop voluntary consensus standards as a sponsor using the ANSI Canvass Method for the following scope of activities:
"Standards and guidelines for information exchange relating to automatic data processing and related systems."
Under our ANSI accreditation, NIST ITL developed several American National Standards in the 1980s. With one exception, those standards were superseded by voluntary consensus standards from other Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs). NIST ITL now maintains its ANSI accreditation solely for the purpose of maintaining the following standard:
Data Format for the Interchange of Fingerprint, Facial & Other Biometric Information (ANSI/NIST-ITL 1-2011, NIST Special Publication 500-290 Edition 3)
This standard is used worldwide for the collection, storage, and exchange of biometric data for government and intergovernmental applications. For example, see the Registry of USG Recommended Biometric Standards.
Since NIST ITL's accreditation by ANSI in 1984, there has been a tenfold increase in the number of SDOs in the area of information technology. NIST ITL is working within this robust standards development ecosystem to develop standards in support of all other programmatic priorities.
