NIST provides robust support for the development and use of voluntary consensus standards (VCS) in lieu of using government-unique standards in accordance with the National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act.

In ITL, our commitment to standards development and support for our private sector-led system is evidenced through our staff members’ extensive standards efforts. We have staff members directly engaged in standards activities across a wide array of SDOs (see our annual reporting to learn more).

Our staff members regularly leverage opportunities to highlight and discuss their standards activities in various fora, from bilateral and multilateral governmental engagements to academic and private sector-hosted engagements. These opportunities to discuss our standards work and goals help us ensure our standards engagements are as impactful as possible.
