Inside the NIST Gas Standards Library

Look inside a lab! Today, let’s step into the moving shelves of a unique library on the NIST campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Here, our Gas Metrology Program stores compounds such as methane, propane and carbon monoxide in compressed gas cylinders. There are approximately 3,000 cylinders in the inventory.

These containers are used to ensure the quality of measurements taken on gases all around the world. That matters when it comes to monitoring sources of greenhouse gases, powerplant smokestack emissions, volatile organic compounds and more.
