ACP Technologies: TDMI Success Story

About

ACP Technologies, LLC (ACPT) has a research facility in Eastern Kentucky and a corporate office in Detroit, Michigan. The company specializes in the development of patented processes to produce isotropic and mesophase pitch. These products are precursors to multiple carbon products such as synthetic graphite which is critical to the quickly growing lithium-ion battery industry.

The Challenge

A technology race is underway to find the best formula, ingredients, and processes to create the most cost effective, highest performing and longest lasting batteries, while still being ecologically responsible. This is especially true in the electric vehicle (EV) battery market. ACP Technologies is developing the technology to make these key carbon-based battery materials and are looking to commercialize their carbon-based battery materials in the near future.

ACP Technologies must understand the battery market better to support their commercialization effort. This includes deeper knowledge of market dynamics, players, pricing, technologies, and more. In the end, they need to know the most profitable processes and best partners/customers that will enable ACPT’s success in a high growth, quickly changing market that is significantly affected by geo-political influences.

KY-MEP conducted extensive research to prepare a market study for ACP Technologies, a local Kentucky company. The result was a well-defined professional market study and analysis. The information collected was of great help to understand the dynamics with the markets for pitch and carbon materials. This information will assist us in developing our strategic plans as we forward into commercialization.

MEP's Role

The KY-MEP, part of the MEP National Network™, researched and provided full reports of potential markets, customers and pricing for ACP Technologies. The study presented an overview of petroleum and coal tar pitch to provide context. These studies included identifying the battery producers within the state of Kentucky and the major battery producers worldwide. They included an in-depth look at some of the potential competitors and current product prices in the US and around the world. Also included was a report on other markets and uses of isotropic and mesophase pitch.

From the study and reports, market players were identified, which lead to an analysis of pricing. The result was a compilation of market information that also included potential partners and/or customers for ACP Technologies to pursue. The report included a full narrative document along with digital files containing market players, their company information, their contacts, and maps showing their location. This study and reports abled ACP Technologies to use this information to focus on the technologies and companies that best fit their pathways to success.
