The employees who went through the ESL class that was offered are much more confident in talking to their English co-workers now; even when the communication is not perfect, they try! One employee in particular was chosen for a promotion because of his success in the ESL class when we had a position open up that required an employee to be bilingual.
The MEP at Columbus State partnered with Delaware Area Career Center (DACC) to provide the training. Due to the nature of the work and the differing shifts of Spanish-speaking employees, the training was offered on-site at LC during a time that was convenient both for associates leaving first shift and those arriving for second shift. Training was provided twice per week for 2-hour sessions.
Content emphasized speaking and listening but included reading and writing. The course utilized a combination of a communicative approach, task-based learning, content-based instruction, and technology-enhanced language learning. 5 employees successfully completed the course and LC reports that communication has improved. One individual was given a promotion after a few months because of his ability to understand and speak both English and Spanish.
