Hazardous Waste Management

With the help of: Kansas Manufacturing Solutions

About

SOR Controls Group, Ltd. (SCG) stands as a preeminent global leader in developing and manufacturing advanced measurement and control devices, operating under esteemed brands including SOR Measurement & Control, Smart Sensors Incorporated (SSi), SENSOR Sampling Systems, and Data Monitoring Systems, and PYRAGON Electronic Instrumentation. Headquartered in Lenexa, Kansas, with regional offices in Houston, Beijing, and Dubai, SOR is renowned for its contributions to the process industry, particularly in the oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical, and nuclear power sectors. The company's robust engineering and design teams are equipped to deliver custom-engineered systems and products tailored to meet specific customer needs.

The Challenge

Due to recent staffing changes, SOR Controls Group required assistance with ensuring regulatory compliance for hazardous waste management and disposal practices at its facility. SOR uses products such as thread lockers, paints, sealants and epoxy, and electrical potting materials. These include various hazardous chemicals such as ketones, phenols, and acid etchants.

Obtaining a hazardous waste management assessment is crucial for manufacturers for several reasons. Regulatory compliance is legally required to manage hazardous waste according to local, state, and federal regulations in manufacturers. Environmental protection requires proper hazardous waste management to help prevent environmental contamination. Improper handling or disposal of hazardous waste can pose significant health risks to employees and the community. Through assessments, manufacturers can identify ways to minimize waste generation and optimize waste handling processes. This can lead to cost savings in production and waste management and improve overall operational efficiency.

After completing our hazardous waste management assessment, we've gained invaluable insights that will streamline our operations and significantly reduce costs. This process not only ensures our compliance with the latest environmental regulations but also sets a new standard in our commitment to sustainability.

MEP's Role

Kansas Manufacturing Solutions, part of the MEP National Network™, provided SOR Controls Group with a hazardous waste assessment. To assess current hazardous waste management activities at the SOR facility located in Lenexa, Kansas, Kansas Manufacturing Solutions first reviewed existing hazardous waste management programs or plans at the facility and completed a thorough physical inspection. Next, KMS reviewed current regulatory status and recent historic disposal information as available at the facility. The team compared observations to regulatory requirements and prepared a written assessment report outlining the results of the investigation and recommendations.
