5508: Livestock and Animal Scales

This 3 day seminar will teach students how to properly inspect and test livestock and animal scales, i.e., perform an official examination by properly applying all applicable NIST Handbook 44 requirements, which are outlined in NIST EPO 12. The sessions will include formal lecture, class discussion, group exercises, audio-visual presentations, and some hands-on practice.

Learning Objectives:

After this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Correctly APPLY requirements and procedures outlined in NIST EPO 12
  • UNDERSTAND and CONDUCT official examinations (inspection and tests) using all appropriate NIST Handbook 44 requirements and requirements from the USDA Grain Inspection, Packers & Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) on livestock and animal scales
  • INTERPRET scale test results

Materials & Supplies:

A course manual and class materials will be provided.

Prerequisite(s):

Participants must have completed the NIST Handbook-44 Self Study course.

Minimum Requirement(s):

Students must be in attendance for the entire class, participate in all group activities that are planned, and achieve a score of 70 percent or higher on a final exam, which will be administered on the last day of the class. Students who do not fulfill these requirements will not receive a certificate of completion.

Audience:

State weights and measures field officials, local enforcement officials, and service agents.

Cost:

TWO registrations are required for this event (first with OWM and second with the local host).

  1. Register in the OWM Contacts System. This information is used to generate attendee registration lists, name tags/tent cards, adequate training materials, and training certificates. The registration list will be shared with the Western Weights and Measures Association hosts.
  2. You must also register for the WWMA annual meeting.
