5803 Fundamentals of Metrology - Overview (NCSLI Sponsored Event Only)

This series of webinars on fundamental measurement concepts are presented as applicable for any field of metrology:  Who’s Who in Metrology and Accreditation, SI Basis for Measurements, Essential Elements of Traceability, Method Validation (Documented Procedures), Technical Competence (Proficiency Testing), Calibration Intervals, Measurement Assurance, Measurement Uncertainty, Calibration Certificates and Evaluations, Supplier Evaluation, and Assessing Traceability.  Several sections will integrate risk management philosophies and approaches.

Notice:  This is a 16-hour course, with no hands-on measurement applications, and while similar to in some modules, it is not in alignment with, successful completion of the full NIST OWM Fundamentals of Metrology seminar.  This course does not meet follow-on course prerequisites of the full seminar to qualify for participation in the NIST Mass Metrology Seminar or Volume Seminar.  The course may be used as a preparatory course for the full Fundamentals of Metrology seminar.  See additional information below regarding the intended Audience.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• IDENTIFY and use reference materials to ensure quality, accurate, and traceable measurement results;
• EXPLAIN highlights and key concepts of each topic to each other and to managers;
• DEMONSTRATE how these topics fit in to a management system using ISO/IEC 17025:2017 as the basis; and
• USE several simple tools, job aids, and references to improve laboratory operations and ensure accurate and traceable measurement results and uncertainties; and
• Each module has unique contributing learning objectives to the overall course objectives.

Materials and Supplies

None.  Materials and handouts provided prior to and during the session.  Participants must have access to online Adobe Connect seminar room and ability to download files from Google Drive and upload files to dedicated Box accounts for workshop materials.

Prerequisites

None.

Pre-work

Participants must submit 4 documents that will be integrated in evaluation activities:

1. an example of a calibration certificate from their own laboratory (redacted if needed),
2. a calibration certificate from a supplier/vendor,
3. the laboratory Scope for the participant’s laboratory, and
4. the laboratory Scope from the supplier/vendor of the certificate brought as item 2.

Minimum Requirements for Successful Completion

Activities and quizzes are integrated into each module with 100 % participation expected for successful completion.  No specific homework is assigned outside of the pre-work to be submitted prior to the course starting event.  Files completed DURING the sessions for which time is allocated must be uploaded to demonstrate completion of the assigned tasks within 2 days of course completion.

Audience

This series of webinars is applicable for participants new to metrology, new to metrology management, as a refresher of fundamental concepts with a high level view, or for anyone responsible for providing on-the-job training to new metrologists to help identify key concepts and prepare someone new to metrology for a successful career.

Cost

The registration fee for this class is $450.00.  Payment instructions are on the NCSLI webpage for this event.  As noted: This course is NOT applicable for full time metrology staff except as preliminary support as a preparatory course.  It may NOT be substituted for the full Fundamentals of Metrology seminar.

The webinar will be a live stream, so participants must have a constant connection during the webinar (hard-wired is preferred).

  • NOTE:  OWM discourages using the Adobe Connect app for iOS and Android because engaging with highly technical content and interactive polls are challenging on a small screen.
