The Deepwater Horizon oil spill has been called the largest response to an environmental catastrophe in the history of the U.S. As the lead science agency for oil spills in coastal and marine environments, NOAA's job is to use the best science and create the tools needed by responders to make on-the-ground decisions in real-time during the crisis, and make smart decisions for restoration. These principles apply to the five areas of NOAA responsibility for oil spills: to conduct and share science, keep seafood safe, protect wildlife and habitat, assess damage, and restore the natural resources injured as a result of the spill.
