The group is recognized for developing and implementing a process to evaluate experimental data measured at laboratories throughout the world, prior to their publication in technical journals. Before the implementation of this new system, some 30% of manuscripts in the areas of thermophysics and thermochemistry contained errors undetected by reviewers and editors. The new NIST-journal data-quality cooperation includes automated validation with NIST data systems, and a robust method for communicating with authors, reviewers, and editors prior to publication of archival results. All of the key journals in the field now participate in the program, preventing erroneous data from propagating into chemical manufacturing and plant designs.
