The team is recognized for technical excellence in developing an international standard and supporting messaging language to enable robot agility in manufacturing applications. Robot agility - the ability for robots to be easily applied to new tasks, and to recover automatically from failures - is key to advancing automation in many manufacturing operations. While robot agility is a goal of most robot end-users, until now standards and tools have not existed to enable this capability. The IEEE 1872 Core Ontologies for Robotics and Automation standard and supporting Canonical Robot Command Language address this gap, and are already being used by major U.S. manufacturers as well as by academic research efforts in the U.S. and worldwide.
