2017 Bronze Medal Award

Dr. Shaw is recognized for creating new mass-calibration schemes in the commercially relevant range from micrograms to milligrams that provide (1) accurate standards for medical mass balances to measure micro-portions of precious materials, and (2) an instrument and technique that can be used by anyone, anywhere, to directly calibrate small masses at a customer site or in the field. Shaw increased the accuracy of NIST's smallest mass standard by an order of magnitude, and extended the range of NIST's mass calibration by two orders of magnitude, eliminating the gap in U.S. mass standards to support a broad range of needs, from pharma research to advanced manufacturing at the smallest scales.
