The group is recognized for revolutionizing pressure-measurement technology by their invention of the Fixed-Length Optical Cavity (FLOC) that redefines gas pressure in terms of fundamental constants. The FLOC replaces the previous standard of 375 years with a single device that is 100 times faster, 20 times smaller, 10 times more precise, 100 times lighter, and two times more accurate. The new FLOC delivers a traceable standard and sensor for U.S. industry and the world metrology community that eliminates the need for mercury, an environmental neurotoxin.
