This group is recognized for identifying the source of, and solving, a major problem inducing mechanical variability in, and failure of, additive manufactured parts made from Ni-based superalloys. Unexpectedly different from traditional manufacturing, they showed that for additive manufacturing, traditional heat treatment results in creation of a deleterious alloy phase that causes part failures. The group proceeded to identify the source of this phase formation and new processing conditions enabling its avoidance, and transferred this knowledge to the additive manufacturing community.
