Braine is recognized for developing a system to monitor, record and display the temperature and humidity in labs housing sensitive instruments and standards and communicate that data by email or text to staff when conditions are out of compliance, allowing them to minimize downtime and loss of equipment and standards. This was especially necessary during the recent furlough when on-site access was limited, because large environmental changes cause damage or out-of-compliance issues to instrumentation that is foundational to many of the dimensional calibration services that NIST provides. The monitoring system is being replicated by another group.
