McClelland is recognized for a series of innovations in laser cooling of atoms, their applications, and fabrication and microscopy technology leading to commercialization of tools and techniques based on his achievements. A partial list of McClelland's patented innovations includes inventions of a magneto-optical trapping ion source for creating an ion beam, a new ion source as a deterministic method for producing atoms one-by-one, an atom beam alignment method, an ion source acceleration column, and integrated ion optics. He translated his basic research advances to multiple, even unrelated fields, transferring his innovations to industry both through commercialization and through the post docs he has mentored.
