Dr. Dewey is recognized for his role in developing and carrying out a novel experiment to measure the antineutrino-electron correlation coefficient in neutron beta decay. The result is based on a novel measurement technique developed by Dr. Dewey, who led the NIST effort in a collaboration among 13 scientists at 5 institutions. The coefficient characterizes nuclear beta decay and it is used to determine two fundamental constants characterizing the weak interaction—a fundamental force of nature. Dr. Dewey’s work resulted in the world’s most precise measurement of the correlation coefficient.
