Dr. La Rosa and Ms. Nour are cited for developing techniques to promote accurate measurement of radioactive contamination in food stocks after a radiological disaster. Their work characterizing wheat and rice harvested after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and distributing reference samples to use in analysis for proficiency testing, culminates 10 years of progress in the NIST Radioactivity Intercomparison Program (NRIP) that enables certification of laboratories responsible for protecting the world’s food supply through radioactivity measurements of environmental samples.
