Mr. Barry is recognized for his conscientious and thorough approach that resulted in the discovery of previously unrecognized safety hazards at NIST’s ballistic range, and for his leadership in developing and implementing appropriate remedies. Each of these hazards could have resulted in a safety incident injuring staff or damaging federal property. The solutions to these hazards required collaboration with manufacturers regarding the limitations and operation of their equipment and supplies. His solutions simultaneously improved the safety of the laboratory and improved the reproducibility and accuracy of the NIST bullet speeds by a factor of three.
