The team is recognized for the development of new techniques for quantum control of molecular ions, including the preparation and coherent manipulation of pure quantum states of single molecular ions, precision measurements of these states with optical frequency combs, as well as the breakthrough demonstration of quantum entanglement between atomic and molecular ions. These techniques have created an exciting new field of study that could prove useful for the development of quantum memories and repeaters based on trapped ions, the building blocks of practical quantum computers and networks.
