Mr. Farrell and Dr. Hagley are recognized for multiple innovations that made SURF III the world’s leading facility for an absolute, SI-traceable, extreme ultraviolet radiation source to support national priorities in semiconductor manufacturing, weather monitoring from space, and ultraviolet sterilization. The Radiation Physics Building renovation and the COVID-19 pandemic were two challenges they successfully surmounted. Their innovations maintaining and improving the facility led to an increase in operating times at high flux levels and the flexibility to tune conditions to meet customer needs.
