The team is recognized for the development of analytical methods to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of hand sanitizers, a measure taken to protect the public from the COVID-19 virus. The team applied their methods to determine the levels of traditional disinfectants in 72 newly introduced commercial hand sanitizers, and to characterize impurities in these sanitizers that might pose health risks. The team’s methods were disseminated for implementation by governmental agencies, testing laboratories, and manufacturers to assess product quality and suitability for use by consumers.
