Dr. Moayeri is recognized for the collection and public release of an invaluable, comprehensive, annotated set of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) data measured by two wearable devices in proximity of each other in different operational scenarios and for assessing the effectiveness of various methods for detecting “close contacts” in the context of COVID-19. He showed that the ranging error of such methods is on the order of meters, making it impossible to decide reliably whether two people are within six feet of each other or not.
