Drs. Aksyuk and Centrone are recognized for the development of nanophotonic atomic force microscope (AFM) transducers that image nanoscale structures with significantly higher sensitivity and greater image throughput than existing instruments. The transducers identify chemical composition and measure thermal conductivity using photothermal induced resonance with a 50 times increase in sensitivity and a 1,500 times increase in temporal resolution compared to the prior state of the art. The improved AFM is an important tool for the characterization of new nanomaterials and semiconductor electronics.
