Dr. Butler is recognized for over two decades of distinguished mentoring and selfless support of young scientists, students, and NCNR users. By organizing and assisting in NCNR summer schools, founding the long-running NCNR "Low-Q" seminar series, and establishing the weekly "Friends of Soft Matter" student meetings, he has trained hundreds of young scientists in the use of small-angle neutron-scattering techniques and helped them succeed in their research careers. His tireless and innovative efforts to educate the global soft-matter research community in the use of neutron-scattering methods have been central to NIST becoming internationally recognized as one of the world's best facilities for small-angle neutron-scattering research.
