Construction of the NIST Gaithersburg campus commenced in 1961 and was completed in phases over the next decade.

On March 23, 1916, a copper box containing National Bureau of Standards (NBS) chemistry memorabilia was deposited in the cornerstone of the NBS Chemistry Building, which at the time was under construction in Washington, D.C. This time capsule was forgotten and lost for decades, but was eventually returned to NIST.
