Gaithersburg Campus Construction, 1960 – 1965

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Gaithersburg, Maryland campus was constructed in the early 1960s to address the cramped and outdated facilities of NIST's original location in Washington, D.C. Construction of the NIST Gaithersburg campus commenced in 1961 and was completed in phases over the next decade.

Dr. Howard E. Sorrows, 1940-1995

Howard Sorrows made significant contributions to the field of technology forecasting and held several key positions at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS.)

Dr. Lewis V. Judson, 1820-1968

Dr. Lewis V. Judson spent his entire 45 years professional career at NBS in length measurements.

Charles P. Saylor, 1935-1979

Collection #007

Extent: .8 LF / .24 Meters

Dr. Saylor’s principal fields were physical chemistry and chemical microscopy.

Time Capsule of 1916

Collection #008

Extent: 1.1 LF / .36 meters

On March 23, 1916, a copper box containing National Bureau of Standards (NBS) chemistry memorabilia was deposited in the cornerstone of the NBS Chemistry Building, which at the time was under construction in Washington, D.C. This time capsule was forgotten and lost for decades, but was eventually returned to NIST.
