Abstract
This chapter concentrates on the thermophysical properties of water, steam and aqueous solutions in a large range around the water critical point. The chapter is written for a technically knowledgeable audience without specialized background in fluid criticality.The chapter is written in three parts. The first part gives a detailed account of the effect of criticality on the thermophysical properties of pure water, using NIST Standard Reference Database 10 as the source for pictorial information. This part also includes a section on the nonclassical theory of criticality. The second part concentrates on the behavior of aqueous solutions of non-electrolytes from the perspective of the underlying fluid-fluid phase diagrams. It introduces the useful concept of the Krichevskii parameter,and presents a table of experimental values for this parameter. It generalizes the nonclassical theory to fluid mixtures. It presents many pictures of the effect of criticality on thermodynamic properties of fluid mixtures, from both theory and experiment. The last part describes aspects of electrolyte solutions near the water critical point. The phase diagram now needs to include the solid phase. This part summarizes what is presently known theoretically about the effect of ions on fluid criticality, warns of pitfalls in customary treatments, and summarizes unsolved problems.
