Highly accurate thermodynamic measurements and time-dependent knowledge of the laser-matter interaction of laser-based welding is required for laser weld modelling to be effective. NIST has undertaken the challenge of what we call the instrumented laser weld and dissemination of measurement results to support modelling and prediction. This endeavor requires metrology by means of strictly controlled boundary conditions, accurate instrumentation on well-characterized materials, and thorough post-process evaluation (mechanical testing, imaging, and more).
Workshop goals: We welcome industry, academic, and government experts to challenge and advise us as we undertake comprehensive metrology and dissemination to support laser joining. For maximum impact on modelling and prediction, NIST has committed the resources for weld characterization and seeks assistance in prioritizing relevant materials and measurement parameters. This work targets two areas: high-value welds where trial-and-error weld development is not practical and laser additive processes (e.g., powder bed/3D printing).
