New Arsenic Sensor Prize Challenge

The Bureau of Reclamation has launched phase one of the Arsenic Sensor Challenge. Arsenic in water can affect human health and limit water supplies.

NIST scientists contributed to the development of this challenge along with the Indian Health Service, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Agricultural Research Service, and the U.S. Geological Survey.

Arsenic is a naturally occurring element found in the environment. While current analytic methods are suitable for ensuring regulatory compliance, the Bureau of Reclamation and collaborators identified a need for a rapid, low-cost arsenic sensor for water treatment plant operations, wastewater monitoring, contaminated site remediation, private well owners, scientific research, and other interested parties.
