W. Stuart Dols is a mechanical engineer in the Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation Group of the Building Energy and Environment Division of the Engineering Laboratory (EL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Mr. Dols works on developing, maintaining and applying building simulation tools including the multi-zone airflow and contaminant transport simulation program, CONTAM. Latest developments include coupling CONTAM with whole building energy analysis software including EnergyPlus and TRNSYS via co-simulation and developing the online tool to model the Fate and Transport of Indoor Microbiological Aerosols (FaTIMA).

Mr. Dols has developed an automated tracer gas measurement system including a Windows-based LabVIEW® data acquisition and control the development system. He has also participated in the characterization of ventilation and IAQ in several large office building throughout the U.S. Many of the characterizations involved the use of tracer gas measurement techniques including: whole building decay, age of air, building pressurization, and airflow rate measurement using the pulse injection technique. During his coop internship with NIST he participated in the characterization of formaldehyde emissions from pressed wood products and the development of automated CO2 measurement systems as well as the development several data analysis software programs.
Mr. Dols is an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) participating in technical committees related to indoor environmental modeling and building ventilation.
