Ala Bazyleva (Fed)

Research Chemist

Ala Bazyleva is a research chemist at the Thermodynamics Research Center (TRC) Group of the Applied Chemicals and Materials Division at NIST. Her current duties include data quality assessment, development of thermodynamic models and methods for data analysis, and supervision of students. Dr. Bazyleva is responsible for cooperation with the Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics, Thermochimica Acta, and DIPPR. She is a task group chair or member of several IUPAC projects, e.g., Recommended Reference Materials for Phase Equilibrium Studies (https://iupac.org/project/2011-037-2-100). Dr. Bazyleva is a member of  the American Chemical Society (ACS), American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Joint ASME/AIChE Committee on Thermophysical Properties, IUPAC Subcommittee on Solubility and Equilibrium Data. She also participates in the NIST MML Career Development Group and the NIST SURF Committee.

Dr. Ala Bazyleva received her MS in Chemistry and PhD in Chemistry from the Belarusian State University in Prof. G. Kabo’s laboratory (Minsk, Belarus). Her dissertation was devoted to studying thermodynamic properties of adamantane derivatives, intermediates in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, by experimental (combustion calorimetry, adiabatic calorimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, Knudsen effusion method) and theoretical methods (quantum chemistry and statistical physics). She subsequently studied surface tension and micellation in aqueous solutions of ionic liquids in the laboratory of Prof. A. Heintz (University of Rostock, Germany); viscosity, thermal properties, and phase equilibria of heavy oils and bitumen in the group of Prof. J. Shaw (University of Alberta, Canada); viscosity of gas-saturated oils in the laboratory of Prof. M. Liberatore (Colorado School of Mines, Colorado). Dr. Bazyleva was a contributor to the NIST-TRC thermodynamic tables in 2007-2009. She joined TRC as an expert in thermophysics and thermochemistry in 2013.

Dr. Ala Bazyleva’s experience and interests include:

  • experimental thermodynamics and thermophysics for pure compounds and mixtures (e.g., different kinds of calorimetry, rheology, vapor-pressure measurements, surface-tension measurements),
  • prediction of thermophysical and thermochemical properties (e.g., quantum-chemical computation, statistical thermodynamics), and
  • cheminformatics.

Dr. Bazyleva has more than 40 publications in peer-review journals and as book chapters.
