John Perkins (Fed)

Chief, Applied Chemicals and Materials Division, Material Measurement Laboratory

John is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in the measurement of materials for advancing material synthesis, specifically for renewable energy technologies. John began his career at National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) as a post-doctoral researcher after receiving his Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received a bachelor’s degree in physics from Harvard University.  Most recently, John served NREL as a senior scientist in the Materials Science Center, where he was a program manager for ARPA-E research at NREL and program integrator for two NREL-led Energy Frontier Research Centers. As a practitioner and advocate of high-throughput combinatorial experimental material science, John collaborated with MML researchers to establish the NIST-led High-Throughput Experimental Materials Collaboratory, and he has presented at NIST-sponsored conferences.

John’s service to the research community includes organizing symposia and training at national and international conferences, advising graduate students from the Colorado School of Mines and University of Colorado. He has authored or co-authored 105 refereed articles, including “The 2019 materials by design roadmap” with NIST co-authors, in technical journals and delivered 39 invited presentations at national and international meetings. John has been honored with an R&D 100 Award, and a Federal Laboratory Consortium Excellence in Technology Transfer Award.
