Natural products are a class of substances found in nature, and are often used/advertised to maintain or improve health and valued for medicinal or therapeutic properties, flavor, and/or scent. They consist of herbal/botanical products, dietary supplements, and phytomedicines. Some examples include and some examples include Ginkgo biloba, Cannabis, tobacco, and essential oils. Standardization of these products is a huge challenge, and includes ensuring batch-to-batch consistency, identifying specific chemical markers, and providing a measure of quality control. NIST is active in assisting the community ensure product quality, authenticity, and consumer safety through reference materials, analytical methods, and quality assurance programs.
