Activities and Lessons Learned from ACI Committee 133 - Disaster Reconnaissance

Abstract

ACI Committee 133 Disaster Reconnaissance was established with the mission of reporting on the effects of major disasters on reinforced concrete (RC) structures. ACI 133 members monitor natural and manmade disasters worldwide to identify events that affect RC structures and for which important lessons may be learned through field reconnaissance (ACI 133, 2014). When warranted, members of ACI 133 deploy for field reconnaissance where they collaborate with local engineers, academics, and governmental organizations to collect quantitative data about structures that sustained various levels of damage. Since its first meeting at the Fall 2013 Convention, ACI 133 has activated teams to respond to five earthquakes, one bridge collapse, and one wildfire. This manuscript highlights these deployments, directs readers to collected data sets and technical papers, and describes major lessons learned. On-going efforts of ACI 133 and its coordination with other organizations to maximize the impact of reconnaissance activities are also discussed.
