Abstract
We report μSR on the 2D rare earth based parent magnets (Mo2/3RE1/3)2AlC with RE = Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er, and neutron diffraction on the series with RE ≠ Gd (a neutron absorber). By crossing information between the two techniques, we determine the magnetic moment (μ), structure, and dynamic properties of all compounds, including the Gd variant. We find that only in RE = Nd and Gd the moments are frozen on a microsecond time scale. Out of these two, the most promising compound for 2D high μ magnet is RE = Gd since the parent crystals are pristine with μ = 6.5 ± 0.5 μB and Néel temperature of 26 ± 1 K.Citation
