Rosemary Astheimer (Fed)

Mechanical Engineer

Rosemary Astheimer is a Mechanical Engineer in the Smart Connected Manufacturing Systems group that works closely with industry and standards consortiums to improve the exchange of digital product data using a Model-Based Definition (MBD). Her focus is on the development of several standards within the ISO 10303 Standard for Product Model Data series, also known as STEP (STandard for the Exchange of Product model data). She is an active member of several subcommittees of ISO SC4/TC 184 subcommittee for industrial data including: Working Group 12 - STEP product modeling and resources (AP 242); Task 1 - Migration of STEP Module Resource Library; and WG 15 - Model Based Digital Manufacturing (AP238). She is actively involved in several projects investigating the use of Universally Unique Persistent Identifiers (UUIDs) to provide traceability of requirements and features throughout a product lifecycle. Collaboration with the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM), PDES, Inc., and industry stakeholders resulted in NIST AMS 300-12 recommending the use of UUIDs in product data standards.

She participates in the CAx Interoperability Forum using her in-depth experience with major CAD systems, including CATIA V4, V5, NX, Creo, and SOLIDWORKS, and her ASME Y14.5 GD&T Certification to support testing of ISO 10303-21, the encoding standard used by vendor implementations. She provides continued support in developing new publicly available test models and pilot test cases, and support for the STEP File Analyzer and Viewer used by implementors to evaluate and report on STEP file contents.

Rosemary revitalized and directed the technical content for the 2024 MBE Summit held at MxD, a Manufacturing USA Institute, and assisted with the QIF Summit organized by the Digital Metrology Standards Consortium. The NIST MBE Summit has brought academia, government, and industry experts together for 13 years to share the challenges, implementation issues, and lessons learned in design, manufacturing, quality assurance, and sustainment of products and processes where a Model-Based approach is used. Proceedings from the 2024 event can be found here. The 2025 MBE & QIF Summit will return to MxD.

Rosemary is on the Board of Directors of the Digital Metrology Standards Consortium, which established and maintains the ANSI Quality Information Framework (ISO 23952:2020) and the Model-Based Characteristics standard.
