The group is recognized for design and construction of three new test facilities that are advancing NIST's efforts in premise plumbing research. Demands of building water systems have changed in recent years, but design guidance and codes still rely on data collected in the mid-20th century. To overcome this knowledge gap, the group developed a facility to evaluate water quality in a test home, a laboratory to assess biological growth in hot water systems, and a laboratory to collect data on the relationship between pressure drop and flow rate through modern plumbing fittings. These facilities are collecting much-needed scientific knowledge and data to enable safe and efficient water delivery for building occupants.
