The theme for the 2024 World Metrology Day (on May 20) is "Sustainability," which raises awareness of the need for accurate measurements in the development of a sustainable global economy and environment. "We measure today for a sustainable tomorrow."
The global metrology community celebrates World Metrology Day on May 20 each year. This extensive community includes the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM), and many National Metrology Institutes and Designated Institutes (NMI/DIs) and regional metrology organizations. It also includes the countless metrology service providers, industry partners, and metrology stakeholders who rely on accurate measurements to underpin business and global trade.
As described on the joint OIML-BIPM World Metrology Day website, this is an annual celebration of the signature of the Meter Convention on 20 May 1875. The Convention set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and its industrial, commercial, and societal applications. The original aim of the Meter Convention—the worldwide uniformity of measurement—remains as important today as it was in 1875.
